Olivier MESSIAEN - page 93 - Sept Haïkaï
Throughout his life, messiaen often spoke of his perception of synesthesia, the correspondence between colours and sounds. Messiaen was not the only composer to do so, as Scriabin also spoke of the idea. The musical public did not often understand how Messiaen was abble to perceive colours when he was listening to complex sounds.
In 1988-1989 Michel Archimbaud had the idea to talk with Messiaen about the idea to recopy a page of his choice, to be reproduced on half of a large sheet of hand-made paper, very high quality. The other half was blank, allowing artists to illustrate the music with original works, painted in colour.
Once the lithograph was printed, Michel Archimbaud regulary climbed up to the organ gallery between the two Sunday morning Masses, that is to say, between 10:30 and 11:00, so that Messiaen could countersign a certain number of copies.
In 1988 Mr Archimbaud printed two hundred specimens.
100 specimens were not countersigned, several specimens were countersigned and numbered.
In 1991 the artist painter Aline Gagnaire (1911-1997) has illustrated two specimens.
